Non-malignant Pleural Disease

Non-malignant pleural disease is a nonmalignant cancer of the pleura, the thin membrane that lines the lung. The only known cause of non-malignant pleural disease is inhaling asbestos fibers.

Pleural disease happens because asbestos fibers get lodged in the lining on the lung and cause scarring. When this scarring spreads across the lung, it is referred to as either pleural thickening or diffuse pleural thickening (DFT). When the scarring is concentrated in a specific area, it is referred to as pleural plaques.

Both pleural thickening and pleural plaques interfere with breathing and may cause shortness of breath and discomfort while breathing. While there are treatments for the symptoms of non-malignant pleural disease, the disease itself has no cure and the symptoms become progressively worse over time. It often takes 10 years or more for the disease to develop after exposure to asbestos.
