Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a disease that is caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. When the asbestos fibers reach the lungs, scar tissue begins to develop. This scar tissue makes it difficult for the lungs to absorb oxygen and results in shortness of breath. In addition to shortness of breath, symptoms of asbestosis may include chest pain, chest tightness, a cough that won’t go away, a crackling sound while breathing, and loss of appetite. These symptoms take years to develop, sometimes up to 20 years or more.

According to the American Lung Association, there are an estimated 1.3 million workers at risk for on the job exposure to asbestos. This includes workers in construction, manufacturing, general industry, and auto repair workers who do brake and clutch repair work.

There is no cure for asbestosis. The treatments for asbestosis treat the symptoms, but they do not stop or slow down the disease. If you or a loved one is suffering from the side effects of asbestosis or if a loved one has died from asbestosis, call Harvit & Schwartz at (304) 343-4100, or email us for a free consultation.
